Tricky Summer Trends
Generally speaking, I am a big proponent of The Uniform: one look — flattering, flexible, and true to your personal style — that you can throw on every single day and feel good. For me, that’s skinny jeans, v-neck t-shirts, and unfussy blazers. Whether it’s for work, for play, or for a rare date night, all I need to do is switch out shoes and jewelry for the occasion.
With that said: there are times when I yearn to try something a little more…FUN. A little out-of-the-box. A look that turns heads (in a good way). And summer, with its who-needs-a-coat temps and free-spirited vibe, is just the time to take some baby steps outside The Uniform.
I’m not talking about a total wardrobe overhaul here. Just a little something-something that will make your friends say “Wow, you are totally working that!”
To illustrate, we pulled three gorgeous 4th Trimester mamas and had them each try a tricky trend of the season: Fringe, Printed Leggings, and the Full Midi-Skirt. Definitely a shade outside the comfort zone for all three of them, but as you can see from the pictures, a little confidence goes a long way towards making a look work enviably well. (Even I — ever-wary of “festival chic” — spent several weeks stalking that fringe jumpsuit online after the shoot.)
Fringe: We managed the plunging neckline on this jumpsuit with the addition of an Undercover Mama nursing tank, and paired it with booties instead of heels to keep it from veering too sexy. The result: a super-fun evening out look that will even accommodate the needs of a nursing mother. (If a jumpsuit is too much, a colorful fringed kimono thrown on over jeans and (yes) a nursing tank is a more low-key approach.)
Printed leggings: Keep it casual! Flip-flops or tennies and a low-key pullover, tone down the WOW factor of printed leggings, making these a totally fun (and thought-out) run-to-the-store-for-diapers alternative to your usual yoga pants or jeans.
Midi-Skirt: Meeting up with friends for lunch during maternity leave? Ditch the jeans and dress to impress in a lovely skirt! The length on this skirt does benefit from a slight lift in the shoe, but I’ve seen it pulled off with a pair of plimsolls too. The trick is to match the vibe of your top with the vibe of your shoe. A polished tee or tank with a wedge heel; a rocker tee and a denim jacket with sneaks.
